Researchers at Western Michigan University, led by Dr. Osama Abudayyeh, and Dr. Hexu Liu, are looking to survey data to make workplaces safer and more efficient.
We recently caught up with Hosam Olimat, a Western Michigan Ph.D. student working with the research team on the survey data, and learned a little about the study and why it is important.
Q. What is the study about?
Hosam Olimat: Our study aims to assess the significance of various factors on workplace safety performance across the Assembly, Transportation, and Manufacturing phases of offsite construction. The insights from industry professionals will help us in shaping a data-driven safety model designed to enhance risk evaluation and refine workers’ compensation insurance rate calculations for offsite construction, leading to a more realistic and effective approach to assessing safety performance.
Q. Why is the study important for workers and employers?Importance for Workers and Employers:
Hosam Olimat: For workers, this research seeks to improve workplace safety by identifying the most critical risk factors and encouraging better safety practices, ultimately reducing accidents and injuries.
For employers, a more effective safety evaluation model will provide a clearer understanding of risk exposure, leading to better-informed insurance rate calculations, potential cost reductions, and improved compliance with safety regulations.
Q. What else is there to know about the study?
Hosam Olimat: By refining the way safety performance is assessed, this study aims to support both workers and employers in fostering a safer, more efficient offsite construction environment.
