Stuart, FL (WorkersCompensation.com) -- It's that time of year again where the news desk looks back on what we learned that we might be able to take forward for a better new year. Or maybe we just like to reminisce about things that made us scratch our heads. Either way, here's what we think were the best or most interesting stories we ran each month of 2024
January
Story: The WHAT: Actions in the First 30 Minutes of an Injury by Dr. Claire Muselman
Why it made the list: Compassionate leadership starts from the get-go when a worker has undergone a potentially life-changing event. Knowing what to do right away can pave the way for a better recovery experience for a worker.
February
Story: Workplace Loneliness Being Tagged as Lethal Pandemic for Workers by Health Officials by Chriss Swaney
Why it made the list: As Americans grapple with the post-COVID workplace landscape, loneliness is affecting their health.
March
Story: What's Authenticity? A Glitterbomb of Leadership by Frank Ferreri
Why it made the list: For about a month and a half Dr. Claire Muselman honored the women who make a difference in workers' compensation, so we were delighted to devote a day to her. If you read our Daily Headlines often, you'll know that Dr. Muselman is prolific and brings all kinds of knowledge and experience to our pages. We're grateful to Dr. Muselman, whose example motivates us to do better each and every day.

Story: What Do You Think: Was Caretaker’s ATV Rollover Caused by 3 Beers and 2 Shots — or 1 Excitable Dog? by Chris Parker
Why it made the list: We like the head-scratchers because they test how we think about workers' compensation, courts, and the law. Just when you think you've heard all, intoxication and canines creep up on ya.

Story: It’s National Nurses Week — Celebrating Nurses! by Anne Llewellyn
Why it made the list: Isn't it obvious? Where would we be without the nurses?
June
Story: Lower Muscle Mass may be Associated with Higher Incidents of Knee Osteoarthritis by F.J. Thomas
Why it made the list: As if we didn't need more reasons to exercise, injury prevention is yet another reminder to get moving.
July
Story: Overturning 40 Years of Precedent, SCOTUS Moves on from Chevron by Frank Ferreri
Why it made the list: Chevron deference seemed like something that could last forever. But change happens, and 40 years of precedent fell one day as the U.S. Supreme Court wrapped up its Oct. 2023 term.
August
Story: National Heat Strategy Includes Workplace Safety among Priorities by Liz Carey
Why it made the list: Increasingly, climate change is becoming a workers' compensation issue, and recent U.S. government action points to the "new normal" of temperature becoming a safety issue.
September
Story: Captives 101 -- Captives in Workers' Compensation by Dr. Claire Muselman
Why it made the list: Dr. Muselman provided useable information on a topic of increasing relevance in the industry: captive insurance. We walked away knowing way more about this important topic in insurance than before the series.
October
Story: Union Slams Wells Fargo for Employee who Died at her Desk by Liz Carey
Why it made the list: This story has us wondering all kinds of things. In a day and age where employers can track your keystrokes and know when you are or aren't working, we're not sure how someone died in a cubicle -- and no one noticed for four days.
November
Story: The Mystery of the Overdosing Worker Whose Spouse Sought Death Benefits by Chris Parker
Why it made the list: Chris Parker took a thinking person's approach to a conundrum a case considered, which helped teach about Iowa workers' compensation law.
December
Story: Bag of Happies: Kristin Green’s Mission to Spread Smiles and Compassion by Claire Muselman
Why it made the list: If you look around, you will see good people doing good things. One of them is Kristin Green.
