Baltimore bridge tragedy inspires new awareness campaign
When a cargo ship struck Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge in March, emergency response efforts focused on dealing with the immediate impacts of the bridge’s collapse, which killed six construction workers and injured two others.
Kids’ Chance took a longer view. Following the tragedy, state organization Kids’ Chance of Maryland announced it would provide scholarships for college or trade school training to the children of the construction workers once they reach college age.
“When a worker is injured on the job, it affects more than just the employee – it impacts the entire family, especially the children,” said Jennifer Wolf, president of the board of directors of Kids’ Chance of America. “Kids’ Chance is dedicated to removing barriers to students’ dreams. We want to ensure that every student whose family has been affected by workplace injury can build a career through a college education or trade school training.”
The Baltimore tragedy inspired Kids’ Chance of America’s new “Building Bridges to Hope” campaign to raise awareness of the scholarship opportunities available to children whose families have been impacted by workplace injuries. Since its inception in 1988, Kids’ Chance has awarded more than $39 million in scholarships to more than 11,000 recipients, with funding provided by both corporate partners and individual donors.
With Kids’ Chance organizations in all 50 states, Wolf said, the goal now is to make more impacted families aware of the scholarships available to children of injured workers.
“Through Kids’ Chance’s Planning for the Future initiative, individuals can refer a child whose family has been impacted by workplace injury,” Wolf said. “Simply fill out the online form at https://pff.kidschance.org and the Kids’ Chance state organization will do the rest. Working together, we can build bridges to hope for families at a time when they need it most.”
