Happy Case Management Week! Celebrating Case Managers and the Role They Play

Case Management Focus
Its National Case Management Week as set by the Case Management Society of America. October 13 is a week where case managers in all settings take time to celebrate the work they do in the complex healthcare system.
As we kick off this important week, I want to remember case managers and the role they play in hospitals, managed care organizations, rehabilitation centers, long-term care settings, workers' compensation, pediatrics, women's health, and other settings where people (patients and families) enter and transition on their healthcare journeys.
Case Managers are in place regardless of the setting to work with patients and their families to understand their diagnosis and how it fits into their life. They encourage people to speak up, ask questions, and share their goals with all members of the treatment team so care can be focused on their wishes.
Case Managers find the resources needed to meet people's needs when resources are not covered by health insurance companies. They advocate for people, especially those who are un/underinsured and have chronic, complex medical conditions. They help people transition on their healthcare journey to wellness, maintenance and end of life.
Case Managers are the voice that says, “what if” when others say 'NO.' They remind hospital administrators and others who follow the money instead of the patient's needs - that we are in business for the patient and must do better than we are doing.
Early in my case management career, this statement defined our mission. It has stood the test of time, and I repeat it so readers can remember and use it as their North Star.
Case Managers work to ensure each patient gets what they need, when they need it, at the appropriate time, in the least restrictive setting, for the most cost-effective price.
I hope every case manager takes the time this week to think about their role and the value they bring to their workplace.
Celebrate personally and professionally because what you do is essential to all members of the healthcare team, but most importantly, the people (the patients and the families we care for). They depend on YOU to help them when they are most vulnerable.
As you reflect on your journey this week, I encourage you to remember the challenges you've overcome and the growth you've experienced.
Recognize the important role you play in the lives of the individuals you've met throughout your career. Your dedication and resilience are truly commendable. Thank for all you do.
