Richmond, VA (WorkersCompensation.com) -- As in other states, Virginia has special workers' compensation coverage provisions regarding post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder, and depressive disorder that is incurred by first responders.

The following breaks down the terms surrounding those special provisions of Old Dominion law. These definitions will be effective as of July 1.

TermsDefinitions
Anxiety disorderA disorder that meets the diagnostic criteria for one or more of the anxiety disorders specified in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association.
Depressive disorderA disorder that meets the diagnostic criteria for one or more of the depressive disorders specified in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association.
Post-traumatic stress disorderA disorder that meets the diagnostic criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder as specified in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association.
Qualifying eventAn incident or exposure occurring in the line of duty:
- Resulting in serious bodily injury or death to any person or persons
- Involving a minor who has been injured, killed, abused, or exploited
- Involving an immediate threat to life of the claimant or another individual
- Involving mass casualties
- Responding to crime scenes for investigation
FirefighterAll salaried firefighters, special forest wardens, emergency medical services personnel, and arson investigators and volunteer firefighters and emergency medical services personnel, if the principal office of the volunteer fire company or volunteer emergency medical services agency has adopted a resolution acknowledging they are employees
Law enforcement officerAll members of county, city, town, or authority police departments, sheriffs and deputy sheriffs auxiliary or reserve police or deputy sheriffs, if the principal office of the auxiliary or reserve police or reserve deputy sheriff force has adopted a resolution acknowledging they are employees , members of the State Police Officers' Retirement System, and members of the Capitol Police
