Attending State or National Workers Compensation Conferences 

Case Management Focus

Orlando, FL (WorkersCompensation.com) -- The 78^th Florida Workers Compensation Conference was held Aug. 18-24 at the Marriott World Center Hotel in Orlando. The conference is THE event for those who work in the arena of workers' compensation in the State of Florida. It is the one time a year that doctors, specialists, nurse case managers, claims adjustors, occupational health nurses, therapists, providers, payers  and others who specialize in this area come together to learn, network, and meet each other in person to celebrate the work we do.  

This year's theme was Supercharge the Future. This was fitting as all of us working in this healthcare arena are superheroes helping employers and employees prevent workplace injuries/illnesses. We are the teams that work with workers when injured and employers to find ways to bring their workers back to gain employment. We do not have easy roles, and it takes clinical, communication, and negotiation skills to be effective in our work.  

The conference offers a diverse range of sessions over a three-day period, providing attendees with the latest advances in workers' compensation laws, treatments, and trends. The best part of the conference for me this year was visiting the Exhibit Hall. The Exhibit Hall was packed with the resources we need to do our jobs. Vendors were on hand to answer questions from attendees on their programs and projects. The best part is meeting someone you have talked to on the phone and putting a name with a face.  

To be a successful nurse case manager, it is critical to build your network and relationships that carry on far after the conference. Building relationships is essential for case managers, so when you need a find a resource at 4:30 on a Friday, you have to go to vendors who will help you meet the injured workers' needs.
