“If we want to protect the promise of workers’ compensation, we must modernize with integrity. And that starts with understanding the tools, not fearing them.” — The MedLegal Professor™
A Personal Welcome and A Professional Call to Action
If you are reading this, chances are you are feeling one (or all) of the following:
• Curious but unsure about how AI applies to your role
• Overwhelmed by the pace of technology and talk of automation
• Frustrated with how disjointed, inefficient, or outdated parts of the workers’ comp system have become
• Or maybe you are simply wondering: “Where do I even begin?”
You are not alone. And you are exactly who this series was created for.
Welcome to The MedLegal Professor’s Technology Lab™, a bold national learning series built for stakeholders just like you:
• Smart
• Committed
• Experienced but new to AI
• Deeply invested in learning and integrating AI ethically and responsibly.
Why I Created the Lab
I have worked in nearly every corner of the workers’ compensation system as an attorney, educator, strategic advisor, and reform consultant. And I have seen something troubling.
We talk about modernization, but we rarely stop to ask:
• What does ethical modernization look like?
• Who gets left behind?
• And most importantly, what are we actually building, and who are we building it for?
The Lab was created to answer those questions with truth, strategy, and compassion.
This is not just a blog series. It is a mission to educate, empower, and elevate the entire ecosystem.
What’s At Stake: The Grand Bargain
At the heart of workers' compensation is a historic promise. The Grand Bargain is a no-fault social contract where injured workers give up the right to sue in exchange for timely, guaranteed benefits.
But what happens when the system becomes so fragmented, slow, or confusing that it no longer delivers on that promise?
This Lab asks a critical question in every article. Does this technology help us uphold the Grand Bargain, or risk violating it? That question is not just a theory. It is our ethical compass.
Who This Series Is For
This series is for all stakeholders in the workers’ comp system. That includes frontline adjusters, seasoned attorneys, QME evaluators, physicians, claims professionals, compliance officers, administrators, insurers, TPAs, and judges.
You do not need a tech background.
You do not need to know what machine learning means.
You do need:
• A willingness to learn
• A desire to lead
• A commitment to restoring purpose to this system
What You’ll Learn in This Series
This Lab breaks down the tech, the ethics, and the impact behind AI.
No hype. No fear. Just clarity and action.
You will learn:
• What terms like AI, ML, NLP, RPA, and LLM really mean
• How to use AI without losing your judgment or your job
• What prompt engineering is and how to write effective prompts
• Why AI + HI™ (Artificial Intelligence plus Human Intelligence) is the only ethical and strategic path forward
• How to evaluate, integrate, and lead with technology in your department or practice
Each article is role-specific, beginner-friendly, and grounded in this principle:
Technology must serve people, not replace them.
The MedLegal Professor’s Insight™
