Glossary Check: Fla. Injuries that Qualify as Grievous Bodily Harm of Nature that Shocks Conscience

Tallahassee, FL (WorkersCompensation.com) -- In some states, including Florida, employment-related posttraumatic stress disorder for first responders and correctional officers is compensable.

In the Sunshine State, for purposes of such compensability, the injuries to which a first responder or correctional officer must be exposed to are injuries that qualify as "grievous bodily harm of a nature that shocks the conscience."

Here is what that term means in Florida:

  • Decapitation (full or partial)
  • Degloving
  • Enucleation
  • Evisceration
  • Exposure of one or more of the following internal organs:
    • Brain
    • Heart
    • Intestines
    • Kidneys
    • Liver
    • Lungs
  • Impalement
  • Severance (full or partial)
  • Third dgree burn on 9 percent or more of the body
