DFS Files Amicus Brief With First DCA In Support of Firefighter's PTSD Benefits

Tallahassee, FL (WorkersCompensation.com) - Today, Florida Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis issued the following statement on an Amicus Curiae Brief submitted by the Florida Department of Financial Services (DFS) in support of Brevard County firefighter, Roger Williams and his battle to secure job-induced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) benefits under Florida’s Workers’ Compensation laws. In 2021, Williams filed for insurance coverage related to PTSD benefits and was unlawfully denied. The brief was submitted by DFS to Florida’s First District Court of Appeal on Thursday, June 16, 2022. To read the full Amicus Curiae Brief, click here.

CFO & State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis said, “As Florida’s State Fire Marshal, I have made it my top priority to support our first responders and ensure they are protected, as they work to keep our communities safe. Today, I’m proud to stand in support of Brevard County Firefighter Roger Williams in his battle to get the benefits he deserves. This case is especially important, as the 1st DCA has an opportunity to set a legal precedent of support for our brave firefighters statewide. PTSD is a serious challenge for many of our first responders, as they see and deal with unthinkable things in the line of duty. June is also PTSD Awareness Month and I hope this case will shine a light on our first responders quietly suffering with PTSD symptoms so that they can get the help they truly need. Being a first responder isn’t just a job, it’s a calling and these heroes have our backs and I am proud to have theirs. My office will continue to look for opportunities to fight for our first responders.”

In 2018, CFO Patronis worked with the Florida Legislature to pass Senate Bill 376 to provide vital PTSD benefits for first responders to give them the support they need as they work to protect Florida communities. An Amicus Curiae Brief is filed by a person or group who is not a party to a legal action, but has a strong interest in the matter, and petitions the court for permission to submit a brief in the action with the intent of influencing the court's decision.
