Cronic Pain/Wonder Cures

RE: Cronic Pain/Wonder Cures
No experience with the implanted nerve stimulator. But once, a long time ago, I had a med pump for surgery that I had. Not in this country though. It helped and I found out from a nurse that I was talking to, that they decided to stop me using it since they discovered that my pain threshold was very high and I didn't use the pump much at all. I had never thought of it. But once they disconnected it, I went into a panic. That lasted about 1 day and then I was fine again. I do know some people here have had equipment removed. So just hold on and someone will come along with the information you are looking for.

I watch too much telly now too. And get drawn into all of the adverts about quick fixes. I looked into the weed side of things, but don't want to go down a path that I might not get out of. No, you are not alone in thinking all of those whacky things. And they are not so wacky at all. Not when you are the one going through the pain.We grasp at any straw that might hold the clue to getting back to our normal lives again.

My Injuries are Listed Below, and that was Only One Surgery! I was not One of the Fortunate Ones that had a Successful Lower back Surgery, and Re-surgery is not an Option for Me. Had it been an Option, I would have had to have a Dam* Good Percentage of Relief and Guarantee of Added Movement before I would let Them Play with My Spine Again!! Don't have Surgeries on If Come Maybe's when it Comes to the Spine, One Slip, and You can End Up Disabled like Me!! I will Live with Severe Pain Forever, so if You have Movement and not too Much Pain, I would Surely Think Hard about another Surgery!! My Very Best to You, I Hope Your Decision is the Correct One!!Wink

Failed Back Surgery, Chronic Pain, Totally Disabled.

If the commercial for this teeter totter thing really worked as good as it has been stated, then you need to ask yourself why your treating doctor doesn't have one, or why your treating doctor hasn't told you to get one? Then you have that answer real quick...

God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage.

I know it's not going to work. I'm just at the point of wishing.

6/97--Discectomy L5-S1. 3/09--Discectomy L5-S1 (failed). 6/09--spinal fusion L5-S1. This year who knows?

RE: Cronic Pain/Wonder Cures
One thing that scares me about the pain pump is a local doc was refilling a pain pump on a guy and missed the port or how every they fill them. Almost killed the guy because of all the meds he dumped right into the body. I don't know how this is done so I don't know if it's a very rare problem or what but the idea is not a good one for me. But they have never talked about a pain pump for me only the SCS. And for that I can say we tried atleast 3 meds to help with the nerve pain and none did. One of them knocked me out like the best sleeping pill the first time I took it. It got better over time but it didn't help. This SCS has been the only thing to work with nerve pain. Most of the time there is no easy cure but I can say my PM doc has done a very good job of working with me on finding the best for me. I'm not pain free and will never be unless they do find something new. My life has changed forever but I feel my PM doc has done his best. I do feel that by my employer's company doctor not doing anything for me that did not help.

When oral medications and/or nerve blocks do not sufficiently control the pain, advanced pain therapies or implantable systems may be effective for treating neuropathy. These systems are designed to interrupt transmission of pain signals from the spinal cord to the brain. If the neuropathic pain signals do not reach the brain, then the patient does not actually feel the pain.

Spinal pumps (or pain pump) delivers pain medication (typically morphine) directly to the intrathecal space around the spinal cord via an implanted pump. The pump is implanted during a surgical procedure, and medication in the pump is added periodically (e.g. monthly) by injecting medication through the skin into the pump reservoir.

Spinal pumps may be used to manage chronic pain from osteoporosis or axial somatic pain (nociceptive pain), and sometimes may by used to manage pain from failed back surgery syndrome (although the efficacy for this use is unclear). Spinal pumps are also used to treat painful spasticity as is seen in multiple sclerosis.

Often multiple medications are put into the pump to treat certain specific situations. That is, morphine to treat the nociceptive pain and local anesthetics (such as bipuvicaine) to treat a neuropathic pain component.

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) for pain control introduces low levels of electrical current to the dorsal portion of the spinal cord to block the sensation of pain. The device is implanted during a surgical procedure, and may include a fully implanted system or a system with an external power source.

Spinal cord stimulators may be used to manage pain from failed back surgery syndrome or radiculopathy (sciatica or leg pain). Current medical literature indicates that 50 to 60 percent of patients will get a 50 percent or better pain relief with this procedure that has lasted up to 20 years post implant.

For each of the above procedures, a trial is first performed to see if it is effective and how the patient reacts before the surgery is performed. Both of the procedures are reversible and the implantable system can be removed.

Bad Boy in your post above what do you mean when you say the relief lasts up to 20 years post implant for the SCS?
