Topomax
My new pain management doctor put me on Topomax and I have been doing some reading on it and it is for weight loss and headaches. I have no idea why he put me on it and I only know he asked me if I had been on neurontin , ametriptolyine etc. When I go back I will ask him why I am put on it now because of all I read about it.

I was wondering if anyone else takes it and what anyone thinks of it. I have nerve pain and have been diagnosed with RSD but do not see any connection with this med. Any input would be appreciated. If it helps me lose weight I would not mind taking it at all...LOL.

RE: Topomax
Topamax has been one of the mainstays of Neuropathic pain and RSD treatment for many years. I don't think anyone knows why it works but Calcium channel action is likely involved.

RE: Topomax
Topamax seems to be an Anti-Seizure Medication, much Like Neurontin. I take 2400mg. of Neurontin Daily for Nerve Inflammation, so Maybe the Topamax May be being Used to Help You in that way also. I Surely Hope it Helps, and Enjoy Your Sunday!!Wink

RE: Topomax
I have just been switched from Neurontin to Topamax, for my sciatica nerve problem. Although the Nerontin took the pain away 100%...it also made me fall asleep all day long. So far, this new med does not make me sleepy, but it has not helped with my legs...but I have just started out on the lowest dosage. So, I am still giving it a try.

I hope it works for you.

RE: Topomax
I take Topamax 200mg Daily for Epilepsy, you didn't mention your dosage, but I do know that it has been prescribed off-label for Nerve Pain (Not working for me @ 200mg daily), for migraine relief, and for weight loss (I have lost over 20 lbs in 8 mos).

Some side effects ypu may notice depending on dosage, carbonated beverages taste nasty, tingling in toes, fingers & face (this usually goes away within first 4 weeks --- unless you have underlying nerve damage ?)

Topamax is often reffered to as "Dopamax" because Topamax affects the Temporal Lobes of the Brain, you may find yourself with short term memory issues, you may not have the ability to recall words, ie; pizza (you can describe it, you just can't find the word), peoples names, etc.... you may be tired.

RE: Topomax
Topamax is an anti-seizure drug that is also used for nerve pain management...It did not agree with me at all. I ended up in ER with a drug reaction. Talk to your doctor if you are hestitant to take it.

RE: Topomax
I am starting out only taking 100 mg's a day right now. I take two in the morning and two at night. I have not noticed any difference in pain relief but what is different is I have headaches now with it. If it is used to stop headaches, why would I get them? I find that odd. I did notice on the second day that I could not spell " Relief " without thinking for a few mins. on how to spell it. LOL. I was stumped for a few mins. which I never would of had trouble spelling that. I see the doctor in 4 weeks and maybe when he sees me and boosts the medication up a bit it might help me more.
