EMG
I am scheduled for an EMG Tuesday morning and have received little instruction on what to do to prepare for the test or what the test involves.
Also can I take my medication before the test ar should I wait until after the test? The test is to findout why I am having pain on the inside of my arm going down to my little fingers, pain in the area of the middle finger, and loss of strength. |

RE: EMG
Good morning Bummer.....I have had several upper and lower body. The only thing I did was not wore any perfume, lotion or powder. Iwasn't told not to , it was just my preference. First I was hooked up to little electrodes (similar to the ones for an EKG) that give you a litttle zap and send a signal to the machine the Dr. uses. That I thought was uncomfortable. Then Tiny needles somewhat like acupuncture needles are inserted in stragegic places. I didn't think they hurt at all. Depending on the Dr. I have had one that took forever and another that was rather quick. Yes you can take your meds, they won't alter the test. Are you taking the Neurontin? If so how are you with it. I started at 100 mg. a day and in a week wne to 200. I know it's minimal and slow but I am so bad with meds no one wants to prescribe. I have not have one side effect at this dosage. Best of luck with the EMG.

RE: EMG
I had one done from my back down to my hands both sides they ask that I wear no lotion,my lawyer ask that I take no meds for the 4 hours before so it would be a true test....one side didnt hurt the other did the doc explained the one side hurt so bad because the nerves were so raw....the Doc was wonderful and a court apointed one afterward she sat with me till I could take my meds

RE: EMG
Bummer= when I had my EMG the doctor did not want me to take my medications until after. I took them with me and as soon as he was done took them.
May God send his angels to hold you in his arms |

RE: EMG
I don't know why both Neuro's who did an Upper and Lower EMG on me never told me not to take any meds. They had no bearing on the test. Still came out with extreme nerve damage , cervical and lumbar. Can someone explain what and why meds would change the results of this test. I can understand making it more comfortable or most definitely someone who takes Lyrica or Neurontin in high doses for a long lenght of time making the reading different as they both calm the nerves but I also can't see if these are the drugs in question how not taking them for a couple of hours would make a difference . It didn't in my case.

RE: EMG
Me too Jayne, all computerized, they all are though. I had one done back in '99 and it was done the same way, no nerve damage then. I could understand if my tests came out negative I would assume the meds masked something. But I had 2 on my lower body and 2 on my upper body, 2 different Dr.s, quite a time lenghth apart, and they both came out showing severe nerve damage in my cervical spine and moderate nerve damage in my lumbar spine. I'm just curious. Like to know these things and why.

RE: EMG
Certain meds can help retain some water, which could speed up or slow down the electric flow chart meter. Meds, can slow or speed up a electric charge of flow through a single nerve, or a nerve path where say one nerve connects with other nerves.
