Bush, the nation's debt limit was raised 7 times during his time in office (Bush was President from January 20th, 2001 to January 20th, 2009). Correct. And Senator Barack Obama voted against it. The issue is, do we spend too much, or not tax enough? People legitimately disagree on this issue. I am in the "spend too much" category. Federal government expenditures have grown by 40% since Obama took office. The Republicans are saying "enough". Most Republicans have agreed to increase the debt limit, as long as there is a concrete plan in place to reduce the deficit by an equal amount. That is a position that Greece, Spain, Italy and others now in financial meltdown should have assumed 10 years ago, but did not. The democrats want to increase taxes, and have proposed largely nebulous cuts off in the future. They did that in 1982 with Reagan, and the cuts never happened. They did that in 1990 with George Bush Sr., and the cuts never happened. Fundamentally, when we say "We must be allowed to keep borrowing in order to continue to live our lifestyle", we are in huge trouble. That is not economically sound advice. President Obama can talk to us like we are children ,telling us we must "eat our peas" and it's time to "rip the Band Aid off", but the reality is he is not addressing the true issues here. If you really look closely, he is simply trying to push the debt limit issue beyond the next election cycle. He is the one who needs to put on his man pants and step up to the job. AARP is running an ad in this area, telling seniors that politicians in Washington are trying to take their Medicare and Social Security benefits away. The ad tells seniors to not be a pushover and stand up for their rights. It ends by saying, "After all, there are 50 Million of us". 50 MILLION. 50,000,000. With more to come. On Social Security and Medicare. And people seriously think it can continue without any change whatsoever? |

RE: Obama quit lying
You are right. That behavior in the private sector is considered criminal. The thing that kills me is the constant push on the Republicans as if it were all their fault.
The Republican controlled house passed a budget this year. Highly criticized for its cuts, but it was a budget. The democrat controlled house never passed a budget last year. The democrat controlled Senate has not passed a budget for over two years. Completely dysfunctional and totally irresponsible. |

RE: Obama quit lying
The real test of what Congress and the president do now is not how they manipulate the "debt limit" they set for themselves but how much real government spending they actually cut and how fast they cut it. ~ Terence Jeffrey
