bad back question

Hi all, hoping someone can answer a question. I work in NJ and have a bad back. I saw a spine surgeon and said i need two surgeries on cervical and lumbar spine. Approximately 3 weeks later, i hurt my lower back even more while lifting a patient at work and Im not sure what to do. I notified my employer, filled out report and all but, knowing i have back problems, I'm not sure what recourse I have. Even though my employer is a scammer, i dont know if my existing problem with my back is an issue, cause it hurts worse now than when i started. I had my back under control until this incident and the pain/ numbness is getting worse. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
