I am a 1099 for a friends company to which he is the only employee. Our bids are not always competitive because of WC added to the estimate...(residential and commercial roofing). If necessary we then use subs for bigger jobs. With no real employees is WC a must...?(Wisconsin)

comp is required for 3 or more employees.
